PostHeaderIcon My back hurts almost all the time. I’m only 16!?

I get regular adjustments from my chiropractor, who’s really good. I don’t get them everyday, because then that just messes up my back. I’ve been going there for about 2 years. I also get a massage once in awhile, but I haven’t gotten one recently.

I usually experience a lot of pain in my cervical, but recently it’s been in my lumbar, so bad that I can hardly get to sleep. I even have a Tempur-Pedic bed and pillow that don’t seem to help! I usually ice my back which makes it feel better long enough for me to sleep.

I’m vegetarian, do you think I could have a deficiency in something that could cause my back to hurt? I also was diagnosed with mild scoliosis, I just have a little curve in my lumbar, but not anything terrible. I do desk work, but only for 3-4 hours a day, nothing extravagant. I’m only 16 and I’m afraid that I’m going to have to live with this pain all my life…

First of all, you didn’t say if you got a complete set of X-Rays. You should really do that to see exactly what’s going on. It’s possible you could have some disc problems. Not necessarily meaning you need surgery. Most chiropractors will not do treatment until the X-Ray is done, so you might have already had that done. The second thing you should do, since the chiropractic treatments don’t seem to be working, is to have your doctor write an order for Physical Therapy treatments. It is possible that a Physical Therapist could look at your X-rays and then show you the back exercises you need. But you really shouldn’t do those until X-rays are taken and read by a physical therapist because if you just do random exercises without knowing exactly what’s going on, you could be hurting your back even more. I know that doesn’t give you specific things to do but it will lead you to proper treatment. Good Luck with getting the help you need.

What do you think about Tempur-pedic pillows?

I used to have a standing two week appointment with my chiropractor myself. I thought she was good, but now I know that she is good for only what she was taught. For all the years I went there I never felt 100% when I left and now I know why. She had no training in the muscles and the muscles were tight in my back, the only reason I needed help in the first place. Because the muscles that are keeping things tight in the back can also trigger other problems, the tight muscles may also be the reason for the scoliosis, the tight muscles are pulling your back one way and it is showing up with the curvature. Once you release those muscles you will probably see that go also. Here is what you need to do to release the muscles in your back and neck as they can feed each other pain unless they both are released you are likely to have pains that move into that area. Just a way to stay ahead of what might be to come. Here is how to release them:
    For your neck:
place your hand alongside your head and push your thumb in under your ear and place it on the muscle there. Take your fingers and place them on the back of your neck on the muscles there. Press them together and hold a good amount of pressure on them. Then relax, take a deep breath and exhale. After 30 seconds you should be feeling the muscle going limp under the pressure. Continue to hold until the entire muscle has gone limp, then lean your head forward as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your head there for another 30 seconds.
    Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.
